Villa
La Topaia
La Topaia retains the traditional structure of a typical Tuscan
farmstead of bygone days: in a commanding position, on a hilltop,
stand the living and farming buildings; all around them, sloping
down to the valley bottom, spread the fields.
Until the 19th century, the manor house was the only building on
the estate. The historic villa was later complemented with a large
farmhouse and later a stable, a barn and a loggia were also added.
Villa La Topaia is ronowned as the setting of a celebrated literary
romance: in 1916, the feminist writer Sibilla Aleramo was staying
here as a guest when she met the local poet Dino Campana.
Serviced
and self catering accommodation
Hospitality is offered throughout the year in two comfortable self
contained units and three double rooms. We can accommodate up to
18 guests.
The apartment units, situated in the former farmhouse, are fully
equipped with all modern facilities and are best suited for families
and parties of friends looking for self catering holiday accommodation.
Integrated farming
The farm spreads over 36 hectares of fields where Michel and Daniela
grow crops of cereals and tend their vineyard. Guests are
welcome to taste and purchase the farm produce, grown according
to the rules and regulations of the 'integrated fight' farming methods.
La Topaia is also a member of the “Pane del Mugello”
(Mugello bread) consortium, a pool of entrepreneurs (farmers, millers
and bakers) who make and market an excellent natural-rise bread
baked in traditional wood burning ovens. Michel and Daniela also
take much pride and care in their vegetable garden and orchard.
Farm holidays
The recent renovation work on the farm has converted into tourist
accommodation units such buildings that were no longer needed for
agricultural activities.
A well kept lawn equipped with chairs and tables is available for
guest use. There are also a wooden and stone outbuilding sheltering
a large table, a capacious barbeque and a wood burning oven where
guests are welcome to cook their open air meals. A ping-pong table
is also available.
Wholesome cuisine
In our family-run establishment, much stress is laid on providing
excellent meals, and when preparing breakfasts and dinners for our
guests we make a point of sticking to the rules of wholesome Tuscan
home cooking: we choose fresh, seasonal produce from our own fields
and from other local farms; even sugar, spices and coffee –
unavailable as local produce – are all purchased from a fair
trade organization.

Where we are
The 14th century Villa La Topaia stands in the midst of the lush
Mugello countryside at some 3 km from Borgo San Lorenzo and it offers
fine views on a charming corner of Tuscan countryside, marked on
the right by the historic Romanesque church of San Giovanni Maggiore
and on the left by the stately Villa di Corte and centennial park
of the Frescobaldi Marquis.
The neighbourhood
Our location in the green heart of the Mugello valley at the foot
of the Tuscan Apennines, alternating farmed land and woods, is the
perfect spot for a relaxing holiday in the celebrated Tuscan countryside.
La Topaia is an excellent touring base for visiting the nearby art
destinations (including Florence, which is just 25 km away), but
even locally you will find great museums, events, shopping opportunities,
