Mugello, Upper Mugello and Sieve Valley

At the foot of the Apennine mountains north of Florence in Tuscany, the Mugello valley – namely the basin of the Sieve river, one of the largest tributaries of the Arno – boasts a charming yet varied landscape ranging from the fir and chestnut forests of the Upper Mugello to the gentle terraced vineyards of the lower Sieve Valley.

Mugello and Florentine Mountain areas
The Mugello region pertains to two Mountain Community Councils, the 'Comunità Montana del Mugello' comprising the municipalities of Mugello (Barberino di Mugello, Borgo San Lorenzo, San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia, Vaglia and Vicchio di Mugello) and Upper Mugello (Firenzuola, Marradi and Palazzuolo sul Senio) and the 'Comunità Montana della Montagna Fiorentina' with the Sieve Valley minicipalities (Dicomano, Londa, Pelago, Pontassieve, Rufina and San Godenzo).

At the gates of Florence
Mugello, where great artists such as Giotto and Beato Angelico were born , lies only a few kilometres north of Florence, and its proximity to several major transportation routes (especially the A1 motorway and the Faentina railway) makes it an excellent base to tour several Tuscan art cities and towns such as Pisa, Lucca and Siena

Mugello, a green holiday
The holiday farms and bed & breakfasts of the Terre di Mugello network are waiting to welcome you in this green and unspoilt valley surrounded with the crowning Apennines.

The area provides excellent opportunities for hiking, biking and horse riding as well as fishing, canoeing and even windsurfing. Major sports facilities include the Bilancino lake, the Mugello international racing circuit and the Poggio dei Medici golf course.

Good food and tradition
Thanks to the joint effort of the Florence tourist board, the town councils, the two mountain community councils, the visitors' offices and many social clubs and businesses, the Mugello events programme offers throughout the year several markets and country fairs based on the agricultural calendar and traditional crafts, food and wine events celebrating seasonal produce and colourful historic pageants and folk events in the old towns and villages of the area .
